Bandage fe is metallic, and metal rusts. You tin patch the crack yous see, but it will still rust under your patch. The rusting volition create pressure on the metallic and the crack volition continue upward By your patch. There is NO long term repair other than replacing it.

i have a large hunk of hard tar that roofers melt to do a "tar and gravel" roof.
i brreak off a little piece and melt it into crack with my torch. it sets up in seconds and makes a long lasting repair.

Why not heat the pipe and so the tar melts on the pipe and seeps into the crevice?

the piping should be warmed some, not heated.
I accept done the aforementioned in my by life, and if the pipe stays warm too long, the tar has a tendency to form long strings within of it, promoting the possibility of newspaper/stuff hanging up on them. This is especially true of lateral cracks on the tops of bandage pipes.

Years agone at that place was a company that produced what they called Crevice Stick .It was zero more than than a roll of tar about 5'' long and the size of a 50 cent coin .You heated it up with your torch and applied it to the crevice in the soil pipe.Don't call back information technology is still produced anymore..

Y'all can wire brush it clean and use 2 role epoxy putty. That stuff tin can hold back water pressure and for a bleed line information technology would be no problem. If the harm is all-encompassing and totally corroding elswhere it should exist replaced though.

joe, you are giving away your historic period. years ago nosotros had something similar. it was chosen securo.
it came in a tube virtually the size of a fatty cigar. the top came off the tube like the peak of a sharpy pen. we always had a tube of securo in our shirt pocket.
as for the tar stuff i have, when i cascade a joint (not very often) i intermission a few small pieces of tar and drop them on top of the oakum. when the hot lead hits the tar, it melts information technology and forms all around the within and the outside of the lead. yep, soil piping used to exist heavily tarred for this reason but nowadays the tar on pipage and fittings is practically non-existent..

will the scissure rust faster than the rest of the metal because the bare metal is exposed to moisture from the flow?

If and then, when I connect a PVC piping to a CI pipe, and cut the CI pipage to make the connection, the cut edge is blank metallic and when I inserted it into a no hub coupling, that bare border will be in contact with water all the time, volition that cause that end to corrode faster?

That is too what I was thinking. I use the "J B Weld" stuff all the time. It is unbelieveable. It is the adjacent best matter since "WD 40" and "duct record" . They brand several types and I prefer the 24 hour use before the 1 60 minutes use. (depending on circumstance)

Duck record or mighty putty

the correct and just fashion to repair it is to replace the rotten section.

Cast iron does not "rust" in the conventional sense of the term. It develops a "patina", but in a fissure that patina creates pressure level, which forces the edges apart and thus elongates, and continues, the crack.

Well, a "professional" would use a commercial product, such as "Krackstick", seal the break instead of tar, anyway.

A "quick fix" would be to wrap some of Sully's "super cast tape" around it. Three rolls for $10.00, but if you act quickly, he will double the offering to Half dozen rolls.
